Celebrate With Our International Pi Day Poster Activity
This March 14th, why not celebrate with our international pi day poster activity!
March 14th isn’t just another day—it’s International Pi Day! This day is all about celebrating the mathematical constant π (pi), which represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Whether your child is a math enthusiast or just beginning to explore numbers, Pi Day is the perfect opportunity to make learning fun.

As a homeschooling parent, you can turn this day into an engaging lesson that blends math, creativity, and history with our easy and ready to use international pi day poster activity!
Our Pi Day Poster Activity on Canva allows homeschooling students the ability to design their own educational posters to showcase what they’ve learned about pi. They can do this right on the Canva platform itself!
This poster activity includes instructions as to how to complete the poster (left image), and then a sample poster (right image) to give students a glimpse of how they can complete our international pi day poster activity.
Why Celebrate Pi Day?
Pi appears everywhere in mathematics, from geometry to physics, engineering, cooking, baking, and of course art.
Learning about pi can help students understand circles, measurements, and real-world applications of math. Plus, Pi Day is a great excuse to bring hands-on activities into your homeschool classroom.

Pi Day Lesson Plan for Homeschooling Parents
Here’s a simple lesson plan to help you introduce the concept of pi in a way that’s engaging and easy to follow.
Objective:
Students will learn about the mathematical constant π, explore its significance, and create a visual representation of their understanding with a personalized Pi Day poster.
Materials Needed:
- A ruler or measuring tape
- A variety of circular objects (lids, bowls, cans, etc.)
- A calculator
- Paper and pencils
- Canva (for the poster activity)
Lesson Breakdown:
1. Introduction to Pi (15 minutes)
- Begin by asking your child what they know about circles.
- Explain that pi (π) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and that it is always approximately 3.14159, no matter the size of the circle.
- Share some fun facts, like how pi has been calculated to over a trillion digits and is used in everything from space exploration to designing roller coasters.
2. Hands-On Measurement Activity (20 minutes)
- Have your child measure the diameter and circumference of different circular objects.
- Divide the circumference by the diameter for each object and observe how close the result is to 3.14.
- Discuss why pi is an irrational number, meaning it never ends or repeats.
3. Real-World Applications of Pi (10 minutes)
- Talk about where pi is used in daily life, such as designing wheels, clocks, buildings, and especially making a pizza pie!
- If your child is interested, explore how pi appears in nature, like in the spirals of shells and the structure of galaxies.

4. Pi Day Poster Activity (30 minutes)
- Using our Pi Day poster on Canva, guide your child in creating a Pi Day poster.
- Encourage them to include fun facts, formulas, or creative illustrations of circles and pi.
- They can also add a famous quote about pi or a challenge question for other learners.
- Once finished, print and display their work or share it digitally with friends and family.

Make Pi Day Memorable
Celebrating Pi Day with a poster activity not only reinforces math skills but also allows kids to express their creativity. Plus, it’s a great addition to your homeschooling portfolio.
